![]() Piazza Simone Village
corners: Piazza Simone Its
correct name is Piazza Umberto I, but tradition names it Piazza Simone.
Nobody knows anymore whom this Simone was, who gave name to this square,
yet his name is still handed down from one generation to another.
It
is an open space, very characteristic, located behind the Church and
delimited by a building, property of the Cimini Charitable Institution,
on one side and by private residences one the others. One
of the “climbing” streets of the old town centre cuts the place in
half: on the right hand side the flat squared area of recent restoration;
on the opposite side, gradually sloping, a smaller space dominated
by a magnificent evergreen tree. The elderly of the village and tourists
find shade and coolness sitting on a bench under its broad, spreading
branches, enraptured and ravished by the silence that reigns. A space
left open between two old buildings allows a vision of indescribable
greatness; a stately landscape draws the eye up toward the mountains,
through the woods, along the paths, reaching the summit of what seems to
be a natural rampart that protects the village against the strong and
impetuous winds. In
the evening, a classical street lamp diffuses its soft and warm light
without adding anything “modern” to the peculiar atmosphere of this
little square, which may be defined the true heart of the village, the
point of reference for passers-by and wayfarers. Sitting
on the bench you can hear the sweetest melody that comes from the songs
of the many species of birds which gather among the branches of the big
tree; a concert that any Grand ‘orchestra or any soloist never would
be able to equal. This
is Piazza Simone: a natural stage that captures and inebriates your mind,
that invites you to a stand still, to close your eyes and to…
dream!
